Water Troughs vs Nipple Drinkers

When setting up a hog waterer, you have a few different options. One option is to use a water tough and the other is to use a automatic pig waterer with a nipple drinker. Both have their benefits and drawbacks.

Since a water trough is open, multiple pigs can drink at once and as quickly was they want. The downside is that the pigs can really dirty up the water and even get inside of it depending on how it is set up. If you use a water tough, make sure you secure it so it stays stationary. I put cinder blocks on the sides of mine and sometimes drive in posts around it to keep it secure.

An automatic pig waterer with a nipple drinker is great at keeping the water clean and the pigs out of it. The downside is that you have to build either water lines or a water storage container to use them with. And the amount of pigs that can drink at once is determined by how many nipples you set up.

I personally have used both water troughs and automatic pig waterers with nipple drinkers for my pigs for different situations. With that being said, here are the best hog waterer drinkers in 2020.

Best Pig Waterer Trough

The nice thing about this pig waterer is that, not only is it tough, it also has an optional float valve kit that was designed specifically to fit it. That means you never have to worry about it running out of water and can keep it full at all times.

Best Automatic Pig Waterer

This 55 gallon automatic pig waterer is a DIY homemade option using the parts below. This is my video and I personally made this pig waterer which has worked great. If you prefer non-video instructions check, out my post on how to make an automatic pig waterer drinker.

Here are the parts you’ll need to install the nipple drinker into the barrel.

Best Automatic Pig Waterer for Portability

The Best Automatic Pig Waterer Using a 275 Gallon Tote

I also made this automatic pig waterer using a 275 gallon tote. What I like about this one is that, not only does it hold a lot of water, I can move it around with the forks on my tractor. So, if I have a paddock that’s far away from my water source, I can go pick it up with the tractor, fill it up, and then move it back.

Here are the parts you’ll need to install the nipple waterer onto the outlet of the tote. Make sure your tote has a 2 inch outlet with course threads.

Pig Waterer vs Pig Drinker vs Hog Waterer vs Hog Drinker

You’ve probably seen all of these terms thrown around when someone is looking for something to provide water for their pigs and you may be wondering what the difference is between them. The answer is there isn’t a difference.

Pig waterer or hog waterer seems to be a more popular term than pig drinker or hog drinker. I prefer the term pig drinker just because it has always sounded strange to me to water my pigs. I typically only water my plants. Either way, pig waterer seems to be the winner based on popularity.
